Projects & COncepts
Pen and Ink: Zentangle using Line and ShapeThis assignment focuses on line and shape. The idea is to use line in a variety of ways to fill a specific shape. Lines can be thick or thin, straight or curved, etc. Using this knowledge of line variety, students will create their own version of a zentangle.

Larger than Life - Form and Value
Students will choose an everyday object, preferably around 6-12 inches. They will draw the object to be larger than life size. If students do not bring in an object, they will draw a smashed aluminum can using a scale larger than actual size. Using pencil, students will focus on contrasting values to create dimension and replicate the texure of their chosen object. |

Acrylic Painting - Positive and Negative Space
Students will draw an object from nature (leaves, vines, etc.). Half of the paper will represent the positive space, which includes the textures and lines that define the object. The other half will represent the negative space. At minimum, the negative space will be painted with acrylic paint. Students may choose to stick with black and white, or they may use color. If color is used, the drawing side will be completed in color pencil to match the tempera paint. |
Representing Texture- Texture and Repetition
Students will find photos of items with contrasting textures. One photo will be of an item that is smooth, shiny, and/or metallic. The other photo will be of something that has highly visible texture that is rough and detailed. The represented texture must be tactile, and not a false representation of texture (i.e. - a cell phone cover that has a photographed image of glitter vs. a surface that is truly covered in glitter). Students will need to look for images that have photographed from a very CLOSE vantage point so that the texture is the focus, not the object itself. Students will print the photos and create some type of grid or division on each printout- these could be lines, squares, waves, circles, etc. Students will number and letter the photos, cut them out, and then piece the composition back together following their numbering system. Finally, students will draw the composition that has been layed out from the photographs. Students will need to focus on lines, shapes, form, and contrasting values in order to achieve an exact representation of the chosen textures |
Pop Art Painting - Color, Contour Line, and Line Weight.
Students will create a completely original painting inspired by Andy Warhol of the Pop Art movement using tempera paint and color pencil. Students will choose an image that is painted a distinctive color scheme. Focusing on contour, students will add contour lines with color pencil and vary the line weight of their contour lines to create empahsis and depth. |

Space and Perspective
Students will take their own photograph of a subject of their choice. The photo composition should focus on using a different vantage point and show space. It's important that the composition have a definitive foreground and background, and displays space and perspective. Students will need to be creative in the set up of the composition and avoid typical points of view - straight on, profile, etc. Consider bird's eye and worm's eye views, as well as foreshortening. You may choose your medium: tempera paint, pencil, or color pencil. |
